Snohetta is a Norwegian architecture firm that is a symbol of Scandinavian architecture and minimalism. Discover the amazing work below!

Founded in 1986 by architects Graig Dykers and Kjetil Trædal Thorsen and based in Oslo, Snøhetta has grown from a small architecture firm to a global powerhouse that brings the best of Scandinavian architecture to the rest of the world! Over its 30 years in business, the firm has taken on many projects, from the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo to kitchen renovations at the famous restaurant French Laundry.

To celebrate the 30 years in business the firm is releasing a book. But this is no ordinary book! The book covers only a few select projects and explores the inspirations and influences of each of these.  It’s an insightful look into Snøhetta‘s process and a celebration of both architecture and design and how these transform our experiences.

Let’s take a look at some of their most iconic works!

The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet was designed to be a place for everyone to enjoy both the wonderful architecture and views over the stunning city. Built in 2008 it quickly became the jewel of Oslo waterfront district and has helped to revive the area.

Under

Designed by Snøhetta, Under is the first underwater restaurant in Europe. It’s located in Båly, a remote village on the South of Norway. And thanks to its location directly on the North Sea, visitors can expect to witness marine wildlife through the panoramic window in the restaurant area. Everything was thought to the last detail, from the rugged exterior that should be appealing to algae and small mollusks to lighting on the ocean floor. This incredible project will also double as a lab for marine biologists to study wildlife.

Svart

This incredible hotel, located at the foot of the Svartisen glacier, is not completed yet but it’s definitely a mesmerizing project! This hotel is also a powerhouse that produces energy and leaves a minimal footprint in the area, preserving local fauna and flora. Since it’s located over the Arctic Circle, Northern Lights will grace the guests during Winter months.

ZEB Pilot House

The firm also works on residential projects, and this house is the perfect example. Designed with extra care this Zero Emission Building (ZEB). The house looks, of course, stunning, bright and feels like part of nature, as natural materials are the main components of the house. This is also one of the most technologically advanced houses in the world.

Snohetta‘s future projects include a snake-like hotel in Lofoten, Norway and we can’t wait to see the outcome of this wonderful project!
